What Is A Gabion?

Gabions (from Italian gabbione meaning "big cage"; from Italian gabbia and Latin cavea meaning "cage") are cages, cylinders, or boxes filled with soil or sand that are used in civil engineering, road building, and military application. For erosion control caged riprap is used. For dams or foundation construction, cylindrical metal structures are used. In a military context, earth or sand-filled Gabions are used to protect artillery crews.

Civil engineering: The most common civil engineering use is to stabilize shore against erosion. Other uses include retaining walls, temporary floodwalls, to filter silt from runoff, for small or temporary/permanent dams, river training, channel lining. They may be used to direct the force of a flow of flood water around a vulnerable structure. Gabions are also used as fish barriers on small streams.

Gabion baskets have some advantages over loose riprap because of their modularity and ability to be stacked in various shapes. They also have advantages over more rigid structures because they can conform to ground movement, dissipate energy from flowing water and drain freely. Their strength and effectiveness may increase with time in some cases, as silt and vegetation fill the interstitial voids and reinforce the structure. They are sometimes used to keep stones which may fall from a cutting or cliff from endangering traffic on a thoroughfare.

Gabions have also been used in building, as in the Dominus Winery in Napa Valley, California. The exterior is formed by modular wire mesh Gabions containing locally quarried stone; this construction creates an environment of moderate temperatures within the building.

Military use: In the medieval era, Gabions were round cages with open tops and bottoms, made from wickerwork and filled with earth for use as military fortifications. These early military Gabions were used to protect field artillery gunners. The wickerwork cylinders were light and could be carried relatively conveniently in the ammunition train, particularly if they were made in several diameters to fit one in another. At the site of use in the field, they could be stood on end, staked in position, and filled with soil to form an effective wall around the gun. Today, Gabions are often used to protect forward operating bases.

Two leading industrial estate operators plan to build a strong, permanent dyke around their properties to curb any future flooding.

Rojana Industrial Park Plc with one estate in Ayutthaya will spend 2 billion baht to erect a 67-kilometre dyke, while Nava Nakorn Plc in Pathum Thani plans has earmarked 600 million baht for a 20-km barrier around its industrial promotion zone in Pathum Thani.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency will advise on both projects, which are aimed at restoring investor confidence.

Construction on the dykes will begin next month and be finished by mid-2012.

Funding will be via soft loans at 0.1% interest from the state-owned Government Savings Bank under the government's 15-billion-baht aid programme for flood-affected industrial estate operators.

Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan said the government must ensure the industrial sector's rapid recovery, as the devastating floods have rendered massive numbers of workers jobless.

The two estates employed nearly 500,Chain link wire,000 people pre-crisis.

The industrial estates started draining water two weeks ago.

Rojana finally dried out on Wednesday, and all of its 240 factories will resume operations next month.

Nava Nakorn should be dry sometime next week, and all 227 Nava Nakorn factories will also restart in January.

Witaya Launglueyos, the senior general manager of Rojana Industrial Park Plc, said many factories have started cleaning up,钢格板安装夹, with three of them including Minebea and Nidec conducting test runs.

Gen Chainarong Noonpakdee, Nava Nakorn Plc's board chairman said his company will ask the government for a tax holiday since the cost of the dyke is relatively high.Clients will also be subject to a surcharge in their monthly utility bills to help finance the structure, he said.

Prior to the start of draining, field fences, microorganisms were introduced to help clean up the water, Gen Chainarong added.

SET-listed Hemaraj Land and Development (HEMRAJ) has postponed its 600-million-baht condominium project by the Chao Phraya River due partly to flood concerns but will proceed with the expansion of two industrial estates on confidence in the investment outlook over the next five years.

The 20-unit condominium project on a four-rai plot on Rama III Road was scheduled for a launch early next year before being shelved, said Paopitaya Smutrakalin, director for planning and investor relations at the country's top industrial estate operator.

The expansion of 2,000 rai at Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate will carry on as planned together with a 750-rai new phase at Hemaraj Rayong Industrial Land. The two expansions will be completed next year.

"Foreign investors remain confident in Thailand's long-term prospects,Operations could resume within 45 days in flooded industrial estates-barbed iron wire, existing supplier base,フェンス, and government supports," said Mr Paopitaya at a briefing at the Stock Exchange of Thailand yesterday.

"However, it is vital the government reassure investors that such severe flooding will not happen again next year and beyond."

More manufacturers are expected to relocate from Japan and Australia to Southeast Asia because of exchange rates, he added.

Hemaraj will also continue with a plan to jointly invest in six more co-generation Small Power Producer projects with a capacity of 120 megawatts each. It will own 25% and spend 400 million baht on each of these plants that will be operational between 2013 and 2015.

In the first nine months of the year, Hemaraj sold 1,212 rai of industrial land and remains on track to achieve record land sales of 1,perforated metal mesh,700 rai this year. Revenue is expected to grow 20-25% over 2010 to 4.45 billion baht this year.

"Utility sales were flat the last two months because some customers have suppliers located in flood-affected areas," he said. "But we view this as a short-term impact and utility sales should be back to normal in the first quarter of next year."

Hemaraj targets utility revenue to double from 2009 to 1.45 billion baht in 2012, climbing to 2 billion by 2015. Its Gheco-One Independent Power Producer project, in which Hemaraj owns 35%, is expected to be operational by the first quarter of next year. It is estimated to generate a profit of 1.4 billion baht per annum from mid-2012 to 2018.

HEMRAJ shares closed yesterday on the SET at 2.22 baht, up 2 satang, in trade worth 56.4 million baht.

Winning after the storm: Learnings from other disasters

Originally designed for use on beaches and marshes for erosion and flood control, the Hesco Bastion quickly became a popular security device in the 1990s.

At the same time,UTCC Q1 growth hinges on post-flood measures-Gabions, they actively sought growth opportunities presented by the post-crisis business environment. Several common themes emerged:

When companies seize these opportunities, more winners will emerge after the storm.

The question then is how companies _ big and small _ can take advantage of the situation.

The impact of the flood on the Thai economy is likely to be both negative and positive. In the former, we have the immediate impact on production disruption, property loss, and insurance & banking losses. However, moving forward the clean-up may actually have stimulatory effects for two reasons.

The current flood crisis has been called Thailand's worst, in terms of both water volume and the number of people affected.

The QIAOSHI's Military Barriers or Hesco Bastions is a modern gabion used for flood control and military fortification. It is made of a collapsible wire mesh container and heavy duty fabric liner, and used as a temporary to semi-permanent dike or barrier against blast or small-arms. Half of the country has been affected. Over 600 fatalities have been reported to date. Views of just how bad it is vary. Some estimate that the cost of direct damage is over 150 billion Baht ($5 billion). Other executives believe this estimate could be significantly understated.

Information

By comparison, in the case of the crisis from the tsunami in Japan, direct damage resulting from the destruction of highways and buildings was around $120 billion to $300 billion. Secondary damage from rolling electricity blackouts, declines in production due to disrupted supply chains, and revenue losses has been estimated to add another $50 billion to $180 billion. The cost of more than 12,000 lives is immeasurable.

- Segment businesses and products according to risk and opportunity Of course, some lines of business will be negatively affected by the flood. But the impact on others will be neutral, or even positive. For each business line,蜂巢挡墙, companies should develop an action plan that is based on both risk and future post-crisis outlook. This will allow companies to think through potential negative impacts and identify how to best seize opportunities.

By comparison, the current Thai flood crisis is less extreme. But it is complex in its own way with potentially significant ripple effects on almost every socioeconomic class and multiple industries.

There are lessons to be learned from these strategies that can be adopted by companies in Thailand.

As the flood crisis continues to dominate headlines here in Thailand, forward-looking companies are on the move to seek growth opportunities that will emerge in post-crisis business.

- Identify and position to capture business opportunities In addition to taking defensive measures, smart companies also went on the offensive and sought new opportunities for growth. Certain businesses _ for example,Thailand tries to help companies, as floods spread-冷轧带肋钢筋焊接网, those focusing on infrastructure investment or consumer products that address home, convenience, or safety concerns _ can expect to expand in the wake of a disaster. On the consumer side, Japanese consumers modified their daily routines in response to the increased stress they faced. They engaged more frequently in activities such as "cocooning" at home and reading. They also scaled back on other activities _ most notably, making purchases related to travel, real estate, automobiles, and other durable goods. Thinking through probable changes to consumer behaviour will likely identify new business opportunities.

- Rethink current activities It is critical that companies analyse how the disaster may change demand and consumption patterns, or otherwise alter the business landscape. This analysis must be done holistically,Democrats unveil price list for Froc's boats-hesco bastion, by looking not only at the immediate supply chain but also several steps away from the immediate goods. For example, automakers should consider the supply and price of steel post-flood, given that there will likely be an increase in construction activities to rebuild and recover affected areas.

We have observed that in the wake of Japan's tsunami disaster, forward-looking companies in Japan moved meticulously through their emergency backup plans and returned to business quickly.

- Create a separate disaster-management team Managers will be fully occupied addressing day-to-day business operations in the aftermath of the crisis. So it is critical that companies set up a separate disaster-management team _ similar to a project management office _ to focus on business recovery and communications. Communicating frequently clearly and often to all stakeholders, employees and customers is also a critical role that this team should play. Companies in Thailand can get ahead by setting up such team while waiting for water to subside.

Firstly, demand for lower skilled labour and all the compensation paid are likely to have an immediate stimulatory impact. Secondly, investments made in infrastructure and potential changes to trade tariffs/policies to encourage foreign investors to stay may offer the potential to change the growth trajectory of the economy in the long run.

In our next few articles, we will discuss how government and businesses can respond to the crisis. We will cover concrete ideas for how companies can turn the crisis into real business opportunities, as well as potential government responses _ short- and long-term measures.

扇形钢格板-Gabions

Gabions

gabions

Gabion structures yield to earth movement but maintain full efficiency and remain structurally sound. They are quite unlike rigid or sem-rigid structures which may suffer catastrophic failure when even slight changes occur in their foundations. Highly permeable,复合钢格板, the gabion structures act as self draining units which "bleed" off ground waters, relieving hydrostatic heads. Interstitial spaces in the rock fill dissipate the energy of flood currents and wave action.

gabions gabions

Efficiency in gabion structures, rather than decreasing with age,Geotextile-Geotextile, actually increases. During early periods of use, silt and vegetation will collect with the rock fill to form a naturally permanent structure and may be used to remove solid pollutants or "floatables" from the water.

Gabions and mattresses may be purchased as as assembled baskets, as unassembled panels, or in rollstock form. Rollstock may utilized to build continuous gabion structures up to 300 feet in length or mattresses up to 150' in length.

Soil erosion is an ever present problem and gabions have proved to be a lasting solution around the world. The earliest known use of gabion-type structures was for bank protection along the Nile River during the era of the Pharaoh. In the subsequent 7,000 years since its initial use by the Egyptians, the gabion system has evolved from baskets of woven reeds to engineered containers manufactured from wire mesh. The lasting appeal of gabions lies in their inherent flexibility.

Gabions are wire fabric containers, uniformly partitioned,不锈钢冷拉丝-Galvanized Wire,扇形钢格板,expanded metal mesh-Expanded Metal Mesh, of variable size, interconnected with other similar containers and filled with stone at the site of use, to form flexible, permeable, wire mesh products, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, sea walls, channel linings, revetments and weirs for earth retention.

Assembling the Hesco Bastion entails unfolding it and (if available) using a front end loader to fill it with sand, dirt or gravel. The placement of the barrier is generally very similar to the placement of a sandbag barrier or earth berm except that room must generally be allowed for the equipment used to fill the barrier. The main advantage of Hesco Barrier, strongly contributing to their popularity with troops and flood fighters, is the quick and easy setup. Previously, people had to fill sandbags, a slow undertaking, with one worker filling about 20 sandbags per hour. Workers using Hesco Barrier and a front end loader can do ten times the work of those using sandbags.
