Thammasat University's flood-hit Rangsit campus has suffered almost 3 billion baht in damage, while Bangkok University's Rangsit campus estimates the flood impact at more than 1 billion.

Thammasat University alumni, including Democrat Party chief adviser and former prime minister Chuan Leekpai, third from left,防滑钢格板, Democrat list MP Kiat Sittheeamorn,UTCC Q1 growth hinges on post-flood measures-hesco barrier, fourth from left, and rector Somkid Lertpaitoon, expanded wire mesh For the use of many industries, right, take part in a clean-up operation at Thammasat Universitys flood-hit Rangsit campus yesterday. PATIPAT JANTHONG

Thammasat University rector Somkid Lertpaitoon yesterday said the entire Rangsit campus, covering around 1,700 rai, had been swamped. The flooding, which has hit the campus for a month, caused about 2.8 billion baht in damage, particularly at Thammasat University Hospital which was the worst hit, with 300 million baht of damage.

The university yesterday held a Big Cleaning Day at the Rangsit campus. Mr Somkid, Thammasat Association president Pichai Chunhavachira, and Democrat chief adviser and former prime minister Chuan Leekpai presided over the event. Students, university personnel, alumni, volunteers and employees of private firms took part.

The rector said some of the damaged assets were insured. However, it would take time to receive compensation.

Pending insurance claims, the university would have to spend its reserves on restoring the university, he said.

Bangkok University rector Matthana Santiwat said the floods caused about 1.1 billion baht in damage to the Rangsit campus. Most buildings, particularly their ground floors, were severely affected.

The university will hold a Big Cleaning Day after Dec 10. The exact date will be made known later, said the rector.

Officials at the Correctional Institute in Pathum Thani yesterday installed three water pumps to eject water from seven detention zones for inmates. Floodwaters receded to 30cm yesterday.

Wichian Thongphum, director of the institute's inmate development, said floodwaters would be drained out in time for a clean-up operation to begin on Tuesday. Around 3,400 inmates who were moved to prisons in other provinces would be returned soon.

Damage was initially estimated at 28 million baht, said Mr Wichian. Floods badly affected machinery used for producing fertilisers, farm tools and chemical-free vegetable produce.

Information

The QIAOSHI's Military Barriers or Hesco Bastions is a modern gabion used for flood control and military fortification. It is made of a collapsible steel wire mesh container and heavy duty fabric liner, and used as a temporary to semi-permanent dike or barrier against blast or small-arms. One of the less heralded life- and labor-saving devices of war, it is used on nearly every United States Military base in Iraq as well as on NATO bases in Afghanistan.

Originally designed for use on beaches and marshes for erosion and flood control, the Hesco Bastion quickly became a popular security device in the 1990s.

Assembly
Assembling the Hesco Bastion entails unfolding it and (if available) using a front end loader to fill it with sand, dirt or gravel. The placement of the barrier is generally very similar to the placement of a sandbag barrier or earth berm except that room must generally be allowed for the equipment used to fill the barrier. The main advantage of Military Barrier, strongly contributing to their popularity with troops and flood fighters, is the quick and easy setup. Previously, people had to fill sandbags,雷诺护垫, a slow undertaking, with one worker filling about 20 sandbags per hour. Workers using Military Barrier and a front end loader can do ten times the work of those using sandbags.
The Hesco Barrier come in a variety of sizes. Most of the barriers can also be stacked, and they are shipped collapsed in compact sets. Example dimensions of typical configurations are 46" x 36" x 32 (1.4m x 1.1m x 9.8m) to 7 x 5 x 100 (2.1m x 1.5m x 30m).

Protection
Filled with sand, 60 centimetres (24 inches) of barrier thickness will stop rifle bullets and shell fragments. It takes 1.5 metres (five feet) of thickness to prevent penetration by a rocket propelled grenade round. Approximately 1.2 metres (four feet) of thickness provides protection against most car bombs.

BAAC, CP to help farmers lift output-Window Screening

Hybrid seeds offering strong yields and disease resistance are provided, while more machine usage is urged to ramp up efficiency.

The Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) has teamed up with a CP Group unit to help flood-affected farmers resume work with more efficient production methods.

That volume is unlikely to meet unusually high demand this year. Normally about 900,000 tonnes of seeds are needed each year, but the Rice Department can only supply 100,000 tonnes each year, causing farmers to reuse paddy for replanting or turning to companies such as CPS for seeds.

Originally designed for use on beaches and marshes for erosion and flood control, the Hesco Bastion quickly became a popular security device in the 1990s.

CPS has prepared 1,700 tonnes of CP111 hybrid rice seed to support the programme. It claims the seed offers productivity of 850 kilogrammes per rai, about two times higher than the average yield of Thai rice.

The agreement signed yesterday between Mr Montri and BAAC executive vice-president Arun Lertwilai is part of BAAC's rehabilitation programme for flood victims.

Rice farmers who obtained career rehabilitation loans from BAAC have the option of entering the programme, in which farm management, technologies and hybrid rice seeds are essential.

To assist rice farmers, the Rice Department plans to distribute 72,000 tonnes of rice seeds to farmers for free, with a limit of 10 kg/rai and 10 rai.

The bank reported 341,496 farm households farming 9.03 million rai of rice fields had 4.68 million tonnes of paddy damaged. BAAC offers low-interest loans of up to 100,000 baht to flood-affected farmers. A three-year debt moratorium with no interest charges is allowed for farmers whose farmland and production were destroyed.

Winning after the storm: Learnings from other disasters

Originally designed for use on beaches and marshes for erosion and flood control, the Hesco Bastion quickly became a popular security device in the 1990s.

At the same time,UTCC Q1 growth hinges on post-flood measures-Gabions, they actively sought growth opportunities presented by the post-crisis business environment. Several common themes emerged:

When companies seize these opportunities, more winners will emerge after the storm.

The question then is how companies _ big and small _ can take advantage of the situation.

The impact of the flood on the Thai economy is likely to be both negative and positive. In the former, we have the immediate impact on production disruption, property loss, and insurance & banking losses. However, moving forward the clean-up may actually have stimulatory effects for two reasons.

The current flood crisis has been called Thailand's worst, in terms of both water volume and the number of people affected.

The QIAOSHI's Military Barriers or Hesco Bastions is a modern gabion used for flood control and military fortification. It is made of a collapsible wire mesh container and heavy duty fabric liner, and used as a temporary to semi-permanent dike or barrier against blast or small-arms. One of the less heralded life- and labor-saving devices of war, it is used on nearly every United States Military base in Iraq as well as on NATO bases in Afghanistan.

Half of the country has been affected. Over 600 fatalities have been reported to date. Views of just how bad it is vary. Some estimate that the cost of direct damage is over 150 billion Baht ($5 billion). Other executives believe this estimate could be significantly understated.

By comparison, in the case of the crisis from the tsunami in Japan, direct damage resulting from the destruction of highways and buildings was around $120 billion to $300 billion. Secondary damage from rolling electricity blackouts, declines in production due to disrupted supply chains, and revenue losses has been estimated to add another $50 billion to $180 billion. The cost of more than 12,000 lives is immeasurable.

- Segment businesses and products according to risk and opportunity Of course, some lines of business will be negatively affected by the flood. But the impact on others will be neutral, or even positive. For each business line,蜂巢挡墙, companies should develop an action plan that is based on both risk and future post-crisis outlook. This will allow companies to think through potential negative impacts and identify how to best seize opportunities.

By comparison, the current Thai flood crisis is less extreme. But it is complex in its own way with potentially significant ripple effects on almost every socioeconomic class and multiple industries.

There are lessons to be learned from these strategies that can be adopted by companies in Thailand.

As the flood crisis continues to dominate headlines here in Thailand, forward-looking companies are on the move to seek growth opportunities that will emerge in post-crisis business.

- Identify and position to capture business opportunities In addition to taking defensive measures, smart companies also went on the offensive and sought new opportunities for growth. Certain businesses _ for example,Thailand tries to help companies, as floods spread-冷轧带肋钢筋焊接网, those focusing on infrastructure investment or consumer products that address home, convenience, or safety concerns _ can expect to expand in the wake of a disaster. On the consumer side, Japanese consumers modified their daily routines in response to the increased stress they faced. They engaged more frequently in activities such as "cocooning" at home and reading. They also scaled back on other activities _ most notably, making purchases related to travel, real estate, automobiles, and other durable goods. Thinking through probable changes to consumer behaviour will likely identify new business opportunities.

- Rethink current activities It is critical that companies analyse how the disaster may change demand and consumption patterns, or otherwise alter the business landscape. This analysis must be done holistically,Democrats unveil price list for Froc's boats-hesco bastion, by looking not only at the immediate supply chain but also several steps away from the immediate goods. For example, automakers should consider the supply and price of steel post-flood, given that there will likely be an increase in construction activities to rebuild and recover affected areas.

We have observed that in the wake of Japan's tsunami disaster, forward-looking companies in Japan moved meticulously through their emergency backup plans and returned to business quickly.

- Create a separate disaster-management team Managers will be fully occupied addressing day-to-day business operations in the aftermath of the crisis. So it is critical that companies set up a separate disaster-management team _ similar to a project management office _ to focus on business recovery and communications. Communicating frequently clearly and often to all stakeholders, employees and customers is also a critical role that this team should play. Companies in Thailand can get ahead by setting up such team while waiting for water to subside.

Firstly, demand for lower skilled labour and all the compensation paid are likely to have an immediate stimulatory impact. Secondly, investments made in infrastructure and potential changes to trade tariffs/policies to encourage foreign investors to stay may offer the potential to change the growth trajectory of the economy in the long run.

In our next few articles, we will discuss how government and businesses can respond to the crisis. We will cover concrete ideas for how companies can turn the crisis into real business opportunities, as well as potential government responses _ short- and long-term measures.

Gabions

gabions

Gabion structures yield to earth movement but maintain full efficiency and remain structurally sound. They are quite unlike rigid or sem-rigid structures which may suffer catastrophic failure when even slight changes occur in their foundations. Highly permeable,复合钢格板, the gabion structures act as self draining units which "bleed" off ground waters, relieving hydrostatic heads. Interstitial spaces in the rock fill dissipate the energy of flood currents and wave action.

gabions gabions

Efficiency in gabion structures, rather than decreasing with age,Geotextile-Geotextile, actually increases. During early periods of use, silt and vegetation will collect with the rock fill to form a naturally permanent structure and may be used to remove solid pollutants or "floatables" from the water.

Gabions and mattresses may be purchased as as assembled baskets, as unassembled panels, or in rollstock form. Rollstock may utilized to build continuous gabion structures up to 300 feet in length or mattresses up to 150' in length.

Soil erosion is an ever present problem and gabions have proved to be a lasting solution around the world. The earliest known use of gabion-type structures was for bank protection along the Nile River during the era of the Pharaoh. In the subsequent 7,000 years since its initial use by the Egyptians, the gabion system has evolved from baskets of woven reeds to engineered containers manufactured from wire mesh. The lasting appeal of gabions lies in their inherent flexibility.

Gabions are wire fabric containers, uniformly partitioned,不锈钢冷拉丝-Galvanized Wire,扇形钢格板,expanded metal mesh-Expanded Metal Mesh, of variable size, interconnected with other similar containers and filled with stone at the site of use, to form flexible, permeable, wire mesh products, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, sea walls, channel linings, revetments and weirs for earth retention.
